Meryl Streep Was Not Expecting THAT Response…
It’s hard to picture the acting industry without powerhouse, Meryl Streep. Before she was cited as “the best actress of her generation” opportunities didn’t come easy to the Academy Award winner.
After working professionally in the theatre, Streep was enchanted by Robert De Niro’s performance in Taxi Driver, the impact shifting her focus to a career in film.
Streep auditioned for the leading role in Dino De Laurentiis’s, 1976 production of King Kong and was reportedly rejected for not being BEAUTIFUL enough.
While attending the audition, Streep claims the producer questioned her appearance to his son, who was responsible for bringing in Streep for the audition, and said in Italian, “che brutta.” Translation? “Why do you bring me this ugly thing?” Streep understood exactly what he said, and to his surprise, responded in Italian by saying, “I’m very sorry that I’m not as beautiful as I should be but, you know—this is it. This is what you get”. That’s him told.
She continued to work her craft on Broadway before her first feature film debut, starring in a flashback opposite Jane Fonda in 1977 film, Julia. The majority of her scenes were cut and Streep recalls the short time as a “terrible mistake…no more movies”.
Streep’s major breakthrough came when she was clocked by the man himself, Robert De Niro after seeing her in stage production, The Cherry Orchard. He suggested she play his girlfriend in 1978 War Film, The Deer Hunter. The film’s success gained the attention of a wider audience and earned Streep her nomination for Best Supporting Actress, the rest is Streep making history. Take that Laurentiis.
